David vs Goliath

I read this fascinating article last night by Malcolm Gladwell "When Underdogs Break the Rules."

In the article, Gladwell describes situations in which unconventional strategies are used and the results are positive.  He uses basketball, war gaming, and business situations to make his point. Two quotes really struck me - 1) "The world runs in real time, but the government runs in batch" and 2) "But let's remember who made that rule: Goliath. And let's remember why Goliath made that rule: when the world has to play on Goliath's terms, Goliath wins".

This all got me thinking about the value of how we approach service; who is Goliath in our world of public higher education; who makes the rules; and how we can influence the rule-making process to better serve our students, faculty, and staff.

If you get a chance, read the article.  It will challenge you to think about things a little differently.

Thanks for sharing the article, Ron. I didn't start by thinking so much about who or what the Goliath is in our environment. I thought more about how we handle the notion of "disruption." I think most people associate the word with something negative, but the article is showing how disruption can be advantageous. Given our field and the fact that so many "disruptive" (read: innovative) ideas can come out of the most distant nooks of our University, I'm interested in how we create an environment where disruption is respected, leveraged and learned from. In the end, I think it can make IT services more agile (like David) when confronting the difficulties and fear of change -- our Goliath.

I love the idea of not playing by Goliath's rules: change the game, be the changer not the follower.

In the Bible story David was given King Saul's armour to put on, but it didn't fit and David went out to fight Goliath in his shepherd's clothes, and used the slingshot he used to protect the sheep instead of fighting with a sword.

Gotta love new ideas which small nimble companies can bring to the table. Shame that in today's world we've mostly seen Goliath paying David off and bringing him into the big boy camp.
