How to Protect Your Identity: the Dos and Don'ts

Monday, March 02, 2009

Phishing scams continue to be a problem on the UW-Madison campus. Despite various information security awareness programs, a significant number of students and staff still disclose personal financial or identity information in response to fraudulent emails and web sites.

Our campus has been putting systems in place to minimize the risks associated with this issue. Part of the challenge, though, is that the phishing attempts often look like legitimate communications, with senders posing as University departments (e.g., the "campus help desk") or other official businesses.

As a result, the CIO's Office of Campus Information Security, in conjunction with the Provost Executive Committee, the Information Technology Committee, the Madison Technical Advisory Group, the Badger Incident Response Team and other campus leadership, is releasing a promotional campaign to campus users that informs them:

"The UW will not ask you to reveal personal identity information via email."

The campaign includes posters, print ads, emails, articles, videos, educational brochures and bookmarks. To access these resources, visit:  http://www.cio.wisc.edu/security/scams.aspx
