Portal module contributes to increase in student voting

Compared to the 2008 spring ballot total, 19.6% more students voted in this year's Associated Students of Madison (ASM) elections held mid-April. Turnout was better than expected: 8.3 percent of students overall voted; 9.8 percent of undergraduates cast ballots. One possible reason? The inclusion of a new ASM voting module in the My UW-Madison portal. "This is the first year students had the ability to vote through the portal. That, combined with increased visibility of the election in the portal news column, likely contributed significantly to the increase in voter turnout," said Katherine Tondrowski, chair of the Student Elections Commission.
