New resource for keeping campus information and computer users secure
Monday, March 17, 2008
Sensitive data is lost, misplaced, printed on mailing labels, posted online, hacked and just left around for others to see more often than we'd like to admit. By one estimate, 53 million people have had their personal information (e.g., SSNs, account numbers, health information) exposed over the past 13 months.
The Office of Campus Information Security (OCIS) has announced a new web site to address the growing risk of data exposure that UW-Madison and other institutions face. The site helps UW students, faculty and staff learn to secure their computers, protect their identities and properly handle University data. Resources on the new site include:
For Students
- Free security software
- Social networking resources
- File sharing advice
For Faculty/Staff:
- Tips for securing computers
- Identity protection strategies
- Guidelines for handling University data/information
For IT Administrators:
- Vulnerability scanning resources
- Risk assessment tools
- Information about security standards

OCIS is a department of the Office of the Chief Information Officer (CIO), and these new resources are hosted on the CIO web site at http://www.cio.wisc.edu/
