Identity Management
The Identity and Access Management (IAM) effort is a way to make University resources (e.g., library services, WiscMail, parking, campus network) accessible to students, faculty and staff, while extending services to a larger community (e.g., applicants, alumni, Union members).
Each of these stakeholders requires different access to resources based on his/her relationship with the university. IAM manages individual identities and controls how those identities access resources. For example, the system will:
- Grant a visiting professor access to the network and course management information
- Provide new hires with an email address to receive employment communications before they begin work
- Allow students to access grades via the Student Center module in the My UW portal
IAM touches every part of the University and involves alignment and integration with existing organizational processes and technologies. Implementing Identity and Access Management is both a process and an infrastructure technology solution.
A team has recently evaluated identity management systems through an RFP process and procured an Identity and Access Management suite of products. The initiative is currently in the preliminary planning stages. More information will be made available as the planning progresses.
