Campus Projects
Recently Completed Projects
Reaccreditation Project
Every ten years the university must be reaccredited by its institutional accrediting body. UW–Madison is scheduled for a reaccreditation site visit in April of 2009. Under the direction of the Provost’s Office, Professor Nancy Mathews is serving as director of the project. The Reaccreditation Project is not an IT initiative, but it will have important implications for IT on campus.
Active Directory Support
Campus departments are requesting the use of the campus NetID Login Service for authentication to their local resources. One way of making that NetID service widely available is to provide central support for Microsoft Active Directory. That will enable campus departments to consolidate on a single credential, the NetID, for allowing access to Web applications and to authenticate users at the desktop level. The Campus Active Directory is now a production service and is in the service expansion phase. Please visit the service web site for more information.
Schubert Career Services Management System
The College of Engineering is developing a web-based management system called Schubert that coordinates meetings between students and employers. This system is being written in such a way that it can readily be used by other campus career service offices. Schubert provides a mechanism for employers to post job openings, search for students whose qualifications match the job requirements, and schedule on-campus interviews. Students use the system to search for positions based on the job requirements, request invitations to interviews, and keep a datebook of upcoming employer visits of interest. Career services staff manage all activities, track coop and internships, and create needed reports. The application is expected to be available to campus in December 2008. Contact Gene Masters or Becky Torrisi for more information.
Event Management Software
The School of Business, School of Education, DoIT and the Athletic Department are working with Business Services on the procurement of event management software for campus. The software would help campus organizations manage event planning functions, such as room assignment, food and beverage service, billing, inventory management and parking logistics. The group submitted an RFP, evaluated proposals, and recently selected Dean Evans and Associates as the vendor. The new system is expected to be available for use by others on campus in late 2008. For more information, contact Carl Hubbard.
iPhone Software Development Kit
DoIT recently purchased an enterprise software license agreement from Apple for a Software Development Kit (SDK). This allows UW-Madison developers8 to create proprietary, in-house applications for free, which can run directly on the iPhone and the iPod Touch. DoIT will act as a central clearinghouse for information and as a contact point with Apple, as well as maintain a mailing list of other UW iPhone developers.
For information about how to access the SDK and join the mailing list, visit the UW iPhone Enterprise Developer web site
Mysoft Upgrade
During September DoIT Voice Services completed a major upgrade to the Mysoft database it uses to manage campus telephone lines. MySoft provides updated and reliable tools for the financial management of voice services, including electronic invoice distribution to customers. The upgrade added new features to help streamline internal processes and it will also make it possible to offer improved services to campus users. A tool to look up who is authorized to order changes to specific lines has already been made available as a result of the upgrade. The ability to customize names associated with telephone numbers on the monthly telephone activity reports will be available by the end of October. Future improvements include a web based order form for placing orders with Voice Services. Contact Terri Kopish for more information.
Help Desk EAST Project
The Help Desk Enterprise Application Support Team (EAST) was formed as the Help Desk partnered with the e-Reimbursement project team to develop a support model for e-Reimbursement.
EAST provides in-depth, functional support for campus enterprise applications and will work with partners to envision and develop support models to meet their support needs. EAST provides dedicated full-time staff to support your IT service and a program of continual service improvement.
Disk Encryption Project
The purpose of this project was to research tools and methods for encrypting data so that restricted information cannot be accessed on a desktop or laptop that is lost, stolen, compromised or disposed of improperly. In May of 2008, the Desktop Encryption Project Team selected McAfee Endpoint Encryption (formerly known as Safeboot) to meet our endpoint encryption needs. Currently, the product is available for the Windows platform only. Interested individuals can contact the Office of Campus Information Security (OCIS) to try one of the 2,000 licenses that are available to campus. Read more.
WiscAlerts-Text
UW-Madison students, faculty and staff are encouraged to enroll in the new campus emergency text messaging system launched in May 2008, called WiscAlerts-Text. The service is used to send critical safety information via text message from UW-Madison Police in the event of a real emergency. Users can enroll through the My UW portal. Read more.
