Campus Projects
Planning Efforts
IT Strategic Planning Process
The CIO Office embarked on development of the first campus-wide Information Technology (IT) Strategic Plan over the summer and fall of 2008. More than 500 participated in weekly planning sessions. A draft of the plan is now posted, and CIO is working closely with individuals and groups to implement the dozens of initiatives within the plan. The IT plan ties in directly with major initiatives within the Campus Strategic Plan.
Information Technology Policy Initiatives
The CIO Office is engaging campus in the development of policy and procedures around key IT functions on campus. A list of currently active projects is noted below. For more information, see www.cio.wisc.edu/policies/ or contact Judy Borreson Caruso.
- Information Incident Reporting Policy
An information incident reporting policy would require employees to report unauthorized access to sensitive information or when media or devices that might contain sensitive information are lost or stolen. Campus staff on the Policy Stakeholders Team are currently developing recommendations for the CIO. The goal is to have a policy and procedures in place by spring 2009.
- Protection of Sensitive Information by Encryption Policy
A policy requiring encryption of sensitive information on workstations, laptops and other portable devices and media would seek to prevent accidental disclosure of the information in the event the device is lost, stolen or hacked. Eight campus staff members have volunteered to participate on the Policy Stakeholders Team. They are currently developing recommendations for the CIO. Plans are to complete the policy recommendations by spring 2009.
- Site Licensing Management Policy
There are no current campus-wide policies and procedures related to selection and funding of site licenses (other than general purchasing policies which apply to any software license). Broader and more systematic input and coordination is desired. Campus staff members on the Policy Stakeholders Team have not begun work, but will do so October 2008.
- Use of Institutional Access Control Services Policy
A policy on Use of Institutionally Managed Access Control Services would require UW-Madison providers of electronic services secured by access controls to use the institutionally managed access control services when those services are suitable for the application. Draft documents are currently being vetted by campus. The goal is to have the policy and procedures in place during the 2008-2009 academic year.
Administrative Process Redesign
This is a comprehensive administrative initiative to improve the efficiency of university business processes. Led from the Vice Chancellor for Administration Office, Administrative Process Redesign involves employees from all levels within schools, colleges and administrative units. This project has significant connections to IT systems on campus, as one of the drivers behind the project is to improve the business processes to better align with existing IT enterprise systems or those being delivered to campus in the near future.
DoIT Business Continuity Plan
This multi-year effort, which began July 2008, will establish a framework and plan to ensure the continuity of DoIT’s priority services if an incident moderately to severely compromises service delivery. The plan will address DoIT’s component of the federally mandated Continuity of Operations Plan (COOP). DoIT's ability to ensure reliable service and service recovery will be clearly identified by the project. A three-year project roadmap and service priority list, both completed in February 2009, provide a prioritized approach and timeline to complete business continuity plans for individual DoIT services and to evaluate proposed enhancements to existing capabilities. For more information, contact Barbie Stimpson.
Project Startup Status & Tools
DoIT uses Project Startup Status & Tools (PSST) software to plan for and manage some of its technology projects. The tool provides charter descriptions, goals, timelines and other project details. See the list of publicly viewable projects.
