Awareness Programs

Cyber Security Awareness Month

October is Cyber Security Awareness Month, the goal of which is to help users better protect their computers and their personal information from online threats. The UW-Madison Office of Campus Information Security sponsors a series of activities each October that are free to UW-Madison campus.

Activites for past events include:

  • Today's Hacker
Rohyt Belani, Director Red Cliff Consulting

Hacking used to be an obscure pastime for the highly curious hobby technologist or adolescent prankster. Over the years it has graduated to a mainstay of the criminal world - a core source of income, replacing many real world cons, burglaries and heists. This session will present several real-world current case studies of actual hacks by real criminals.

  • Practicing Incident Response – Table Top Exercise
    Badger Incident Response Team (BadgIRT)

BadgIRT will conduct a tabletop exercise demonstrating computer security incident response. Live, before your very eyes, three team members, plus a volunteer recruited on the spot from the audience, will grapple with a realistic scenario set at the UW-Madison. Before the drill, we'll set the stage with some background information on incident response processes and preparations which you can use in your own department. Afterwards, we'll critique the drill and allow plenty of time for questions and answers.

  • Give Your Computer a Security Health Check Up
DoIT Help Desk and Office of Campus Information Security

Bring your Windows computer to this hands-on workshop. We'll help you determine if your computer is adequately protected from common security threats. As a class, workshop leaders will help you check your computer configuration for essential security settings. Participants will independently correct these configured security settings, as needed. In addition, participants will scan their computers for security problems for indications of infections and correct any problems the scan uncovered. Workshop leaders will guide participants through this process and help you interpret/correct findings. There will be plenty of time for questions!
