UW Madison Endpoint Protection Requirements Gathering Team

UW’s current agreement for Symantec's anti-virus product expires in June of 2010. The Committee on Institutional Cooperation (CIC) schools - the Big 10 schools plus the University of Chicago - collectively negotiated our current Symantec agreement. Since this agreement is nearing its end, the CIC schools are once again coordinating efforts to identify, evaluate, select, and purchase security products that benefit everyone. Each CIC school will evaluate endpoint (i.e., host-based) protection products from a number of vendors, and all of the evaluation results will be combined and analyzed to determine a course of action.

The number of security threats and the number of products available to address those threats has increased dramatically since our original agreement with Symantec. Therefore, this initiative will involve a comprehensive approach that extends beyond just anti-virus products.

The product(s) chosen will be based on the requirements gathered by all of the CIC schools. The Office of Campus Information Security (OCIS) is coordinating Madison’s requirements gathering efforts. We have assembled a small team of volunteers from across campus to draft questions for a Request for Proposal template from the CIC. The team has completed one round of work and would like to request feedback on it from the rest of the campus community. We want to do our best to ensure that the endpoint security products we consider have features that benefit everyone.

To comment on the RFP, please download the following files:

  • CIC Instructions – These are the instructions the team received for filling out the template. They provide information on the structure of the template and guidance on how to fill it out.
  • Draft Requirements Template – This is the draft the Requirements Team has drafted so far.
  • Draft OS Compatibility – This is the OS compatibility matrix that will eventually become section 5 of the main RFP
